Entrepreneurs Martyn Stuttard and Chris Warbrick gave up successful careers in the corporate world to launch their own bespoke events company – and are now reaping the rewards.
Their Scene My Event company has provided decor, theming and entertainment to scores of events across the north west, including a number of high profile celebrity weddings and parties.
The pals only started their company 18 months ago, when Martyn was planning his own wedding and saw that he could source better quality decor and entertainment for better prices than many traditional wedding planners were offering.
But already they have been recognised by entrepreneur Theo Paphitis as one of his Small Business Sunday winners and were commended at the 2018 Made in Bury Awards in the Best Start-Up Business category.
They are now looking forward to accelerated growth in 2019 with their bespoke events decor and entertainment business.
Martyn, 33, from Bury, says: “Planning my own wedding I could see what a huge difference there was in prices and quality out there. I decided it would be cheaper to import my own blossom trees as centrepieces for my wedding – and it just went from there.
“We started extending our range and we now have everything from chair covers to magic mirror photo booths and light-up dance floors through to providing DJs, full scale production or saxophonists and bongo players.”
Martyn is also well known as a DJ across Manchester performing as Martyn Russo, having performed at the legendary Sankeys nightclub, and at Parklife Festival and with a residency at celebhaunt bar Neighbourhood on Spinningfields.
It means he has a wealth of contacts in the entertainment world, and Scene My Event also boast an impressive roster of DJs and artists working with them on events.
The pair say they differ from other companies in that all of the prices for their events decor and entertainment can be found on their website – and don’t fluctuate in price depending on the kind of event.
Chris, 30, from Bolton, says: “What we’ve found is that a lot of wedding suppliers don’t give their price upfront, and from Martyn’s own experience, the price could go up or down depending on if it’s for a wedding, or even if it was a woman or man asking for a quote.
“We advertise every single price on our website, we are very transparent, we don’t inflate prices, and this sets us apart really.”
The friends met when both were working for a large ecommerce company in Manchester.
And they believe their experience in the corporate and customer service industries have stood them in good stead for their new foray into events.
Chris says: “The thing for both of us is we want to grow Scene My Event into a market leading brand.
“We have been growing the business by investing in new technologies and can see corporate events as a key area for growth for us in the new year.”
Clients include Rivington Hall Barn, Astley Bank Hotel, The Events Co at Old Hall in Chester, The Colony HQ in Wilmslow and Manchester Hall, where Chris and Martyn have also worked on the launch of the venue’s spectacular new late night bar Vanitas.
They provide all the DJs and entertainment for the bar, and are Manchester Hall’s preferred supplier for events across the Bridge Street venue.
They also work with other high profile events companies to provide party decor and support, and recently worked on Rio Ferdinand’s 40th birthday party at Rosso Restaurant and Paddy and Christine McGuinness’s Twinkle Ball, both with GO:PR.
Chris said: “We want to be known as one of the leading event companies in the north west, so whether it’s a couple planning their wedding or someone opening a new bar, we want it to be us at the forefront of their minds.”
Company turnover this year was £150,000, with the expectation of 200 per cent growth in the year ahead.
Having started out by storing their products in a shipping container, they have now have their own showroom in Bury.
And their events certainly cause a buzz on social media – with the lads boasting 18,000 followers on their Facebook and Instagram feeds, found at @scenemyevent
